In Autobiography of a Yogi, the author Paramahansa Yogananda has a chapter about a woman saint who does not sleep. To paraphrase, she tells him that there is no difference between any of the states of consciousness: deep sleep, nocturnal dream and the day-time dream we call ‘regular waking life’. These are all different changing phenomena that appear for a short time and later disappear-but never remain.
For her nothing ever changes.
The true Saint is one who does dwell in any of those realms or changing states but abides in the changeless Self or Eternal Awareness.
Over the last couple of months, I have had many nights where normal deep sleep or nocturnal dreams have not taken place. This has allowed a small glimpse into the life of that Sleepless Saint.
A glimpse of Reality is worth more than all the precious gems and monetary wealth in the world. All the material matter will fall away but the Essence of that glimpse never will.
